Treatment of EVA with corona discharge to improve its adhesion to polychloroprene adhesive

Abstract: Abstract-Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) material containing 20 wt% vinyl acetate (EVA20) was treated with corona discharge to improve its adhesion to polychloroprene adhesive. Several experimental variables in the corona discharge treatment of EVA20 were considered: corona energy, type of electrode, and number of consecutive treatments. Advancing contact angle measurements (water, 25 ± C) showed an increase in the wettability of EVA20 after treatment with corona discharge, which corresponds to an increase in the… Show more

“…The discharge power was set to 93 W. 150-mm-long EVA samples were passed under the electrode at two different speeds of the counterpart electrode (0.36 and 11.3 m/min). These conditions provided values of the corona energy of 10.3 and 0.3 J/cm 2 , respectively [13].…”

“…Corona discharge and low-pressure plasmas have been also studied as effective surface treatments of EVA leading to oxidization on the surface, increasing its surface energy and creating surface roughness [1][2][3][4].…”

“…Organic solvents are often used for cleaning surfaces but present various environmental problems, and the role of many traditionally used solvents is being reduced or eliminated by a combination of legislation and growing environmental awareness. Other surface treatment techniques such as flame, plasma, and corona discharge have also been developed [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. Although these surface treatments are efficient and used widely in industry, they suffer from drawbacks such as high cost, hazardous operating conditions, byproducts, and the inability to treat complex geometric shapes.…”
