Treatment of Equine Allergic Diseases with Allergy Neutralization. A Field Study

Abstract: The allergy desensitization technique, know n as ª intradermal neutralizationº , was originally described by Dr H. Carlton-Lee. The procedure w as later extended and modi® ed by Professor J. B. M iller of M obile, Alabama and currently is used extensively for treating allergic disease in humans, especially in the USA, but also in Canada, the UK and Australia. The technique has been shown in many clinical papers to be effective in humans as a means of desensitizing both food and biological inhalant allergens. I… Show more

“…We suggest that the improvement of knowledge in the pathogenesis of CHS could also favour the development of better diagnostic methods and new therapy protocols. As successful desensitization has been reported by some authors (Mansfield et al., 1998), the production of a recombinant antigen involved in triggering CHS could allow the development of a desensitizing protocol.…”

“…In various other diseases of the horse an IgE‐mediated aetiology has been suspected but this remains controversial. These diseases include inflammatory airway disease (IAD), also known as recurrent airway obstruction (RAO, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or heaves ), and head‐shaking . Inflammatory airway disease can be induced by a hyperreactive response of the lower respiratory tract to inhaled moulds and organic dusts .…”

“…In horses, type I hypersensitivity has been investigated, suggesting that this reaction might be involved in immune-mediated diseases such as summer eczema (Larsen et al 1988;Ungar-Waron et al 1990), urticaria, and head shaking (Mansfield et al 1998), as well as RAO (Halliwell et al 1993;Schmallenbach et al 1998;Eder et al 2000;Eder et al 2001;Curik et al 2003;Künzle et al 2007; Morán et al 2010).…”
