Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is newly established as a category of eating disorder (ED). Acupuncture is one treatment option for ED. However, no cases of acupuncture treatment of ARFID have been reported.A 28-year-old female presented with reduced food intake and weight, abdominal bloating, abnormal sense of taste, and tongue pain. Her body weight (BW) had been around 50 kg until four years previously. Three years before, her symptoms occurred, and her BW decreased to 36.5 kg after experiencing excessive mental stress at her workplace. She was diagnosed with ARFID by a psychosomatic physician and tended to refuse her prescribed antipsychotic drugs. She was treated weekly with the Hokushin-kai style, a traditional Japanese acupuncture, and the moxibustion method. After one month, the patient felt somewhat better and returned to work once a week for the first time in two years. Four months later, her BW started to increase. After 10 months, her BW had increased to 48 kg. Her acupuncture treatment continues. This case suggests acupuncture as an optional treatment for ARFID. Further studies, such as a combination of medications and acupuncture, would be desirable.

Background: Spinal cord injury patients frequently suffer from anxiety and depression, which can seriously affect their quality of life and recovery. Acupuncture, as a traditional Chinese therapy, has been used to treat anxiety and depression for more than 2000 years. The aim is to evaluate the clinical efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of anxiety and depression in spinal cord injury patients. Methods: The literature on acupuncture treating anxiety and depression in patients with spinal cord injury in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Scientific Journal Data, and Wanfang data were searched through computers from the establishment of the database to May 2024. In the study, the Cochrane tool for assessing the risk of bias was used and the meta-analyses were carried out using the software package Review Manager 5.4. Results: Ten trials were included in this systematic review, with 361 cases in the experimental group and 355 cases in the control group. Meta-analysis showed that compared with conventional treatment, acupuncture combined with conventional treatment was beneficial in improving the total clinical efficacy (odds ratio = 3.55 [95% confidence interval {CI}: 1.34–9.37], P < .001). We found acupuncture-assisted therapy could be beneficial in improving the Modified Barthel Index (MD = 10.48 [95% CI: 4.78–16.19], P < .001) and reducing anxiety or depression scores (such as the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale [MD = −6.08 {95% CI: −6.85 to −5.30}, P < .001]; reducing the Self-Rating Depression Scale [MD = −6.01 {95% CI: −6.95 to −5.07}, P < .001]). In addition, the study showed that the application of acupuncture treatment could improve 5-hydroxytryptamine compared to control group (MD = 44.99 [95% CI: 40.04–49.95], P < .001) and reduce TNF-α compared to control group (MD = −7.78 [95% CI: −8.73 to −6.83], P < .001). Conclusion: Acupuncture could be used as a complementary therapy to reduce anxiety and depression in spinal cord injury patients. Further original and high-quality research is needed to verify the conclusions of this study.

A Meta-analysis of Different Acupuncture Modalities Combined With Antidepressants to Reduce Major Depressive Disorder

Objectives Acupuncture is an effective therapy for depression. Nevertheless, the results of clinical studies on major depressive disorder (MDD) remain controversial. Methods By November 2023, English-language published randomized clinical trials involving acupuncture for treating MDD were searched. The analysis comprised 9 studies with 809 subjects who met the eligibility criteria. The quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Quality in Prognostic Studies (QUIPS) tool. Results Acupuncture moderately alleviated the severity of MDD, independent of the method used (standardized mean difference [SMD] = −0.55; confidence interval [CI] 95%: −1.19, 0.09; P = 0.08). The severity of MDD was moderated by MA, regardless of antidepressant use (SMD = −0.49; CI95%: −1.13, 0.14, P = 0.09). Subgroup analysis revealed a nonsignificant reduction in MDD severity when using manual acupuncture alone (SMD −0.52; CI95%: −1.47, 0.44, P = 0.18). MDD severity was reduced by the use of manual acupuncture and antidepressants (SMD = −0.47; CI95%: −0.88, −0.06). Laser acupuncture and electroacupuncture (with or without antidepressants) did not significantly affect the severity of MDD. Conclusions Manual acupuncture with or without antidepressants may alleviate the severity of MDD, but its clinical benefit for treating MDD is inconclusive.
