Treatment of cosmetic tattoos with nonablative fractional laser in an animal model: A novel method with histopathologic evidence

Abstract: Nonablative fractional lasers (NAFLs) successfully remove cosmetic tattoos by transepidermal elimination of tattoo pigments through the disrupted dermal-epidermal junction. This action is facilitated by the wound healing process.

“…Laser-induced transepidermal elimination has been reported in previous studies after CO2 resurfacing or nonablative 1,550-nm erbium:glass fractional laser treatment. 9,10 Because only a limited portion of the XP lesions was treated with the CO2 laser in our patient, marked clinical improvement could have resulted from transepidermal elimination of the target tissues by the pinhole method.…”

“…Cosmetic tattoos are traditionally treated by Q-switched lasers without satisfactory results. Since the introduction of fractional laser, Wang et al [10] studied the effect of a 1,550 nm, erbium-glass fractional laser system to remove cosmetic non-black colored tattoos. They used the energy settings of 17 mJ and 169 MTZ/cm 2 , 2 passes (total density of 338 MTZ/cm 2 ) for five sessions at 1 month intervals on rats.…”

“…conventional q-switched lasers and are indications of allergic reactions. 11,27 So far, the removal of ink particles has been demonstrated for both AFXL 28 and NAFXL 29 procedures. It would be more than interesting if this concept could be extended to other granuloma, fungi, or parasites.…”
