Treatment of bovine retained placenta and its effects

Abstract: The literature on the treatment of retained placenta and its effects is reviewed. Manual removal, the oldest and commonest method of treatment, benefits parlour hygiene but may adversely affect the cow. The use of collagenase may allow manual removal without such side effects. Ecbolic drugs are often ineffective, both as prophylaxis and treatment for the condition. They are most effective within one hour of parturition, particularly after a caesarean section in which tocolytic drugs have been used. Endometriti… Show more

“…Activities of some of these enzymes and of their inhibitors are hormone dependent [Salamonsen et al, 1991[Salamonsen et al, , 1993Salamonsen and Nancarrow, 1994;Hampton et al, 1995;. Finally, collagens are a major element of the ovine fetal membranes [Shandley et al, 1997] and the bovine placentome [Sharpe et al, 1990;Sarges et al, 1998], so that the use of collagenase was successfully tested for prevention of retained fetal membranes [Eiler and Hopkins, 1993;Peters and Laven, 1996].…”

“…Concerning RFM, many and different methods of treatment are described with a relative effectiveness, often with contradictory results or with a negative effect on cow's further reproductive performance (Drillich et al, 2007;Frazer, 2005). Manual removal of retained membranes, intrauterine treatment or systemic administration of antibiotics, prostaglandin or estradiol could be mentioned here (Peters & Laven, 1996; Stevens & Dinsmore, 1997; Drillich et al, 2007). In many parts of Europe and less in the United States of America and Canada, veterinarians apply mainly the manual removal of fetal membranes in cows with RFM and administer antibiotics in the uterine cavity .…”

“…In many parts of Europe and less in the United States of America and Canada, veterinarians apply mainly the manual removal of fetal membranes in cows with RFM and administer antibiotics in the uterine cavity . Some investigations, however, discover that manipulations in the uterine cavity decrease the uterus protective mechanisms (Paisley et al, 1986;Peters & Laven, 1996) and cause infertility (Drillich et al, 2007). Opsomer (2015) had found that cows intrauterine treated with antibiotics did show a reduced incidence of postpartum fever during the first 10 days after calving.…”

“…The absence of any improvement in reproductive performance in Group E and Group DP indicates that there might have been a synergism between estradiol benzoate and dinoprost. Estradiol, in combination with dinoprost, has been shown to reduce intrauterine bacterial contamination [28]. In addition, only Group E+DP received two treatments, and repeated exposure of the uterus to estrogen might have facilitated the clearance of the intrauterine environment.…”
