Treatment of Benign Biliary Strictures in Chronic Pancreatitis by Self-Expandable Metal Stents

Abstract: Aim: To determine the efficacy the value of self-expandable metal stents in patients with benign biliary strictures caused by chronic pancreatitis. Method: 61 patients with symptomatic common bile duct strictures caused by alcoholic chronic pancreatitis were treated by interventional endoscopy. Results: Initial endoscopic drainage was successful in all cases, with complete resolution of obstructive jaundice. Of 45 patients who needed definitive therapy after a 12-months interval of interventional endoscopy, 12… Show more

“…A single plastic stent was compared with multiple plastic stents in one non-randomized study [64]. The remaining studies were all case series, of which 33 were retrospective[16,21-29,31,35-37,39,41-44,47,49-51,53-55,59,60,62,64] and 14 prospective in design[15,30,32,34,38,40,45,48,52,56-58,61,63]…”

“…Also, SEMS may be useful as a "temporary bridge" to surgery in selected patients. In five published series, SEMS were deployed in patients with chronic pancreatitis and biliary stricture that did not respond to serial plastic stenting or in patients unfit for or unwilling to have surgery [9][10][11][12][13] (see Table 3). The success rate was quite variable (37%-100%), with lowest patency rate seen in the only study in which a covered SEMS was deployed [12].…”
