Treatment of a bilaterally severely resorbed posterior mandible due to early tooth loss by Guided Bone Regeneration using customized allogeneic bone blocks: A case report with 24 months follow‐up data

Abstract: The application of customized allogeneic bone blocks has shown to be a successful augmentation technique even compared with with autologous bone blocks reconstructing highly resorbed mandibulary alveolar ridges demonstrating no compromises regarding clinical outcome, functionality and esthetics.

“…Furthermore, applying digital technology to GBR procedures may help to improve the predictability of bone augmentation. Several case reports have reported the successful application of 3D-printing individualized titanium mesh and individualized allogeneic bone blocks in the treatment of severe bone defects [16][17][18]. However, there is still a lack of effective and convenient digital methods in the treatment of small and moderate bone defects.…”

“…Virtual planning of the bone block requires advanced knowledge of both anatomical, as well as implant, considerations. This method has been able to show promising results in several case reports over the last couple of years [2][3][4][5][6][7]. Puros ® Allograft Customized Bone Blocks (ACBB) have been available since 2014.…”

“…Puros ® Allograft Customized Bone Blocks (ACBB) have been available since 2014. They are prepared based on the multi-step Tutoplast ® tissue sterilization process, which was developed in 1969 [4]. After purification of the donor material and milling in a clean environment, the block was packaged and sterilized with low-dose gamma irradiation [8].…”

“…Customized allogeneic bone grafts have been demonstrated to function as an ideal scaffold for the augmentation of alveolar ridge defects with high success rates and great predictability 1‐5 . Compared to other biomaterials, allografts provide favorable characteristics in terms of graft and particle size as well as a favorable inter‐ and intraparticulate porous geometry to supply osteoconductive effects and to maintain the graft volume 6 .…”

“…Nowadays, computer‐aided design/computer‐aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology enables the individualized manufacturing of allogeneic bone blocks for complex alveolar ridge augmentation procedures. Several case reports already demonstrated the high precision fit and the successful application of customized allograft blocks 2‐5 . However, so far there are limited reports about the long‐term fate of the implanted bone allografts 8‐10 .…”
