“…j j | tg '^M' eol §^* §^s^' s S'l! S The adequacy of the haematological response in iron deficiency anaemia to total-dose irondextran infusion has been previously reported by a number of authors (Gartlan, 1964;Varde, 1964;Basu, 1965;Bonnar, 1965;Clay et al, 1965;Goldthorp, Spencer & Dawson, 1965;Lane & Scott, 1965;Manson, 1965), but these studies related to patients seen in obstetric and gynaecological practice. The results in the present series indicate that a similar satisfactory response can be obtained in patients within a wide age range and suffering from a variety of clinical conditions.…”

“…Subsequent reports (Marchasin & Wallerstein, 1964;Varde, 1964;Bonnar, 1965;Dawson, Goldthorpe & Spencer, 1965;Manson, 1966) have confirmed that intravenous iron-dextran is well tolerated in quantitities containing up to 3 g of iron. The report by Clay et al (1965) of frequent severe reactions with this form of therapy is contrary to the general experience.…”

“…Nagai et al [34] and Varde [35] in two different studies of intravenous iron in ID, reported safety and efficacy in > 2,000 gravidas of complete replacement dosing with iron dextran in a single setting. Nearly ubiquitous efficacy was observed without any SAEs.…”

“…While 6 experienced transient minor infusion reactions, all of which resolved without therapy, there were no SAEs. The authors concluded intravenous iron has less toxicity and is more effective than oral iron supporting moving it closer to frontline therapy [35]. …”

“…Iron deficiency anemia remains one of the most common problems facing the obstetrician, being particularly pressing in the last weeks of pregnancy and after bleeding associated with abortion or delivery (3,4). The value of continuous intravenous infusion (TDI) of iron dextran complex has been well documented as a rapid means of correcting this condition in pregnant women because of the certainty of dosage and administration, with a predictable and rapid hematologic response (1,3,4,6,9,13,14). The main drawback of intravenous iron is, however, the occurrence of systemic reactions that can be mild, moderate or severe.…”
