Treatment for Therapy-Resistant Depression

Abstract: Thanks to progress in the diagnosis and treatment of depression it is now possible for most cases to be treated on an out-patient basis. Only 15–20% of patients require hospitalisation, most of them because their depression has proved resistant to therapy. To overcome therapy-resistance the following methods of treatment are available: (1) In therapy-resistant endogenous and psychogenic depressions, mono-infusion therapy is the treatment of choice; it can also be administered on an out-patient basis. (2) In ex… Show more

“…Both tryptophan (L‐TP) and 5‐hydroxytryptophan (5‐HTP) have been used to treat depression with controversial results. Pharmacological augmentation have been used with MAOIs, clomipramine and fluvoxamine (67, 68). A case series of seven patients suggested that the triple combination of lithium, clomipramine and L‐TP are effective in TRD(69).…”

“…The effective functioning of MAOs help in regulating the level of biogenic amines in brain (e.g., dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine) (Lin et al ., ); therefore, any alteration in the functioning of MAO enzymes would eventually affect the level of biogenic amines that may cause mood disorders. The inhibitors of MAO enzymes have been reported for antidepressant action (Kielholz, ) and also used as psychotropic drugs (Maki, ). Clinically, MAO‐A inhibitors are used for treatment of depression (Laux et al ., ).…”
