Treatment for Peritoneal Metastasis of Patients With Colorectal Cancer

Abstract: From the perspective of survival outcomes, the cancer survival of colorectal cancer (CRC) in the whole stage has improved. Peritoneal metastasis (PM) is found in approximately 8% to 15% of patients with CRC, with a poorer prognosis than that associated with other sites of metastases. Randomized controlled trials and up-to-date meta-analyses provide firm evidence that cytoreductive surgery (CRS) plus hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) could significantly improve overall survival compared with sys… Show more

“…However, the best treatment option remains controversial. Adjuvant hormonal therapy, sclerotherapy with tetracycline, and HIPEC has been suggested as treatment options [17] . However, it is believed that surgery with complete removal of cystic lesions is the only effective treatment, and provides the only chance for avoiding local recurrence.…”

“…Based on the consideration that biophysical changes of the thorax and a less hospitable environment for tuberculosis bacteria might have been the reason for the success of this unconventional approach, we theorize that our model of cell dehydration could have similar promising effects on PM. In patients with cancer diseases, the metastatic process in the peritoneal cavity is a critical factor for survival ( 25 ). Using physical principles in innovative treatments of PM and other surface malignancies seems promising and has been attempted several times ( 26 29 ).…”

“…Chemotherapy is the major treatment for CRC that has spread to other organs, and surgery is only occasionally employed. However, with advancements in systemic therapy, increased use of genetic information, and the development of surgical techniques, more individuals with metastatic CRC can benefit from curative-intent surgical surgery [16][17][18].…”
