Treatment and posttreatment skeletal effects of rapid maxillary expansion investigated with low-dose computed tomography in growing subjects

Abstract: When analyzed on coronal CT scans, the maxillary halves were separated by RME in a parallel manner and not in a triangular shape. At T2 after RME therapy, the suture appeared reorganized, and the expansion of the nasal cavity was stable.

“…After reaching this limiting value, the elastic modulus is reduced (E final = 0.01 MPa) to represent an unorganized connective tissue. All these assumptions were made to represent the MPS opening as observed in clinical studies found in the literature (Ballanti et al, 2010;Weissheimer et al, 2011).…”

“…Preliminary FE analyses were done switching the threshold stress value between 0.5, 0.1 and 0.05 MPa. Based on preliminary FE displacement results and analyzing the parameters to adjust the bilinear model simulations to clinical results (Ballanti et al, 2010;Weissheimer et al, 2011), a stress value of 0.1 MPa was assigned as the threshold for changing the elastic modulus. This represents the stress level at which the disorganization of the MPS functional unit occurs.…”

“…41 In the available literature cone-beam CT technology is described by several author [45][46][47] as a means to examine RME effects; 48,49 however, the morphological appearance of the suture structure itself or measurements of the width has not been described before.…”

“…Ballanti et al (34) investigated the changes in the distance between the central teeth apices after RME and concluded that during the expansion period, the distance increased to 3.49 mm and decreased to 1.98 mm after 6 months. In our study, between T0 and T2, a significant increase of 2.48 mm was measured in SRME group but no significant difference was measured in RME group.…”
