BackgroundThis study aims to assess the profile and predictors of Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in Type II Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) patients in Quetta, Pakistan.MethodsThe study was designed as a questionnaire based, cross sectional analysis. 300 Type II diabetic patients attending public and private hospitals were targeted for data collection. In addition to demographic and disease related information, Euroqol Quality of Life was used to measure HRQoL. Moreover, Drug Attitude Inventory and Michigan Diabetes Knowledge Test were used to assess medication adherence and diabetes related knowledge respectively. Treatment satisfaction was assessed by patient’s experience towards health care professionals and available facilities. Descriptive statistics were used to elaborate patients’ demographic and disease related characteristics. Binary logistic regression was used to predict factors independently associated with HRQoL. SPSS v. 20 was used for data analysis and p < 0.05 was taken as significant.ResultsPatients in the current study reported poor HRQoL with a mean score of 0.48 ± 0.36. Age, duration of disease, number of prescribed drugs, medication adherence and treatment satisfaction were significantly associated (p < 0.05) with HRQoL in the cross tabulation analysis. The significant variables were entered into the model that showed significant goodness of fit with highly significant Omnibus Test of Model Coefficient (Chi-square = 12.983, p = 0.030, df = 4). Medication adherence was reported as a significant predictor of HRQoL with an increase of one adherence score was associated with improvement of HRQoL by a factor of 1.75 provided other variables remain constant.ConclusionThe study presents a model that is associated with HRQoL with patient with T2DM, where medication adherence shaped as a predictor of HRQoL. Healthcare professionals should pay special attention on patients’ medication taking behavior and should put their efforts in explaining the benefits of the medication adherence to the patients.

This article is a research report about the relationship between adherence to medical treatment procedures recommended by doctors with health quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Adherence to medical treatment regimes is often associated with the health related quality of life. In some previous studies, it was found that the quality of life of patients with chronic diseases decreased compared to health populations. Chronic disease such as diabetes mellitus is one of the diseases that get the attention of the Indonesian government to be immediately addressed. The purpose of this study was to look at the link between the level of adherence and health related quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The study was conducted at the primary health service (PUSKESMAS), using the SF 36 and Morisky Medication Adherence Scale to measure both adherence and health related quality of life. The results showed that level of adherence was in medium level, so was their quality of life. There was a significant relationship regarding the patient's adherence and health related quality of life. Adherence to treatment regimes improves better physical and psychological conditions and will ultimately improve the patient's quality of life.

One of the treatment objectives in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is improving their quality of life (QoL). Illness perceptions are major determinant of QOL. This study was aimed to evaluate the QoL of T2DM patients with complications, and to examine the correlation between patients' illness perceptions and QoL. We conducted a cross-sectional study in a private hospital in Yogyakarta, Indonesia from July to September 2015. We recruited adult patients with a diagnosis of T2DM with complications (ICD E.11) that has been diagnosed for at least 3 months. Illness perceptions were assessed with the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ), and diabetes type 2 specific QoL with the Diabetes Quality of Life for Clinical Trial Questionnaire (DQLCTQ). Data was analyzed using Pearson correlation test. We recruited 51 T2DM patients. Female patients were dominant and most of the subjects experienced T2DM more than 5 years. The BIPQ scores indicated that patients had positive perceptions about T2DM and the treatment in all domains, except for coherence. Scores on the DQLCTQ showed that T2DM patients' QoL is good, except for the self satisfaction and treatment effect. Statistically significant positive correlations were observed between BIPQ dimensions of personal control, treatment control and coherence and QoL domains (p<0.01). Moreover, the strong negative correlation were observed between consequences, concern and emotional response and QoL domains (p<0.01). However, 92% correlations are weak. Illness perceptions are correlated with T2DM patients' QoL. Rancangan penelitian ini adalah potong lintang yang dilakukan di rumah sakit swasta di Yogyakarta. Subyek yang berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini adalah pasien DM tipe 2 dewasa dengan komplikasi yang terdiagnosa minimal 3 bulan sebelum penelitian ini dimulai (ICD E11). Kualitas hidup diukur dengan Diabetes Quality of Life for Clinical Trial Questionnaire (DQLCTQ) dan persepsi pasien diukur dengan Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ). Sejumlah 51 pasien DM tipe 2 dengan komplikasi turut berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini dari bulan Juli sampai September 2015.
