Treating the speech disorder in Parkinson's disease online

Abstract: SummaryThe Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) has been shown to be highly effective in treating the speech disorder in Parkinson's Disease (PD). However, patient access to this treatment remains limited in Australia, due to availability of speech pathologists, patient mobility and distance issues. We have investigated the feasibility and effectiveness of an Internet-based telerehabilitation application (eREHAB) for the delivery of the LSVT to persons with PD and disordered speech. Ten participants with PD an… Show more

“…Tele-health delivery of services to patients is well established and effective (Theodoros et al, 2006;Russell, 2004 Tele-supervision models can also be used to support remote supervisors and hence increase supervisor capacity, providing a win-win for students, universities and clinical supervisors. The evidence base is growing that tele-supervision has similar outcomes or nil negative impact on students' capacity to develop and demonstrate competence in comparison with traditional models of supervision.…”

“…The development of LSVT included treatment adaptations that we previously identified in this review as LSVT-X [74], LSVT-web [72,76,78,84] and LSVTgroup [85]; another LSVT variant is called LSVT-Companion, which involves the use of a dedicated software and calibrated microphone to allow patients practicing LSVT exercises independently at home [90]. One study suggested that even a less intensive form of LSVT treatment (LSVT-8, i.e., 8 instead of 16 sessions in 1 month) would lead to better results [71] than classic LSVT.…”

“…Further support for the use of telepractice has been shown in studies comparing the outcomes of LSVT ® delivered remotely to the outcomes of traditional treatment delivered FTF. Investigators have reported post-treatment improvements achieved following remote LSVT ® and a similar magnitude of treatment effects was shown when compared with the FTF group (Constantinescu et al, 2011;Tindall et al, 2008;Theodoros et al, 2006). The benefits for such remote intensive voice treatment were that it may assist in reducing the effects of physical disability, and eliminates the need to travel to a hospital or clinic when transport and travel difficulties are encountered (Constantinescu et al, 2011;Tindall et al, 2008).…”

“…Parkinson's disease using the LSVT ® (Constantinescu et al, 2010;Constantinescu, Theodoros, Russell, Ward, Wilson, & Wootton, 2011;Howell, Tripoliti, & Pring, 2009;Tindall et al, 2008;Theodoros et al, 2006). It has been shown that online assessment of the speech and voice disorders associated with Parkinson's disease was generally reliable and valid and the results are comparable to the FTF assessment (Constantinescu et al, 2010).…”
