Treating Opioid Dependence: Pain Medicine Physiology of Tolerance and Addiction

Abstract: Inappropriate and excessive opioid prescribing practices for treatment of chronic nonmalignant pain contributed to rising rates of opioid related mortality. Effective and widely available opioid addiction treatment resources are needed to ensure successful resolution of the “opioid epidemic”. “…Commonly used opioids for the management of neuropathic pain include tramadol, oxycodone, and morphine . Although opioids are efficient in pain management, long-term use can greatly decrease the quality of life with severe side effects and tolerance, which makes patients hesitant to use them despite the pain .
