Background. Genital warts are sexually transmitted diseases for which there is no definitive cure. This study aimed to determine the effect of the combination of olive leaf extract and curcumin on the number of lesions and the duration of recovery in patients with external anogenital warts. Methods. This study is a three-blind randomized controlled clinical trial conducted in 2020. In this study, women with external anogenital warts were enrolled by the consecutive nonprobability sampling method and then assigned by stratified block randomization to two groups: placebo (n = 28) and intervention (n = 26). In the intervention group, the combined olive leaf and curcumin extract was applied topically three times a day until recovery and up to 12 weeks. Routine treatment was administered to both groups in addition to the interventions. The number of warts, the duration of recovery, and the severity and duration of treatment side effects were assessed in all participants. Results. The results showed that the mean number of warts was significantly lower in the intervention group (5.65 ± 5.223) than in the placebo group (7.61 ± 5.245) from the fifth day of treatment onwards ( p = 0.027 ). The mean duration of recovery in days in the intervention group (14.73 ± 9.735)) was significantly less than the placebo group (34.25 ± 18.863) ( p = 0.001 ). In addition, there was no significant difference between the two groups in the frequency of drug side effects such as burning ( p = 0.083 ), redness ( p = 0.413 ), and itching ( p = 0.706 ). The intervention group experienced side effects for a shorter duration of time (1.50 ± 1.924) compared to the placebo group (4.93 ± 8.366) ( p = 0.043 ). Conclusion. The combined 10% olive leaf and curcumin extract can be effective in reducing the number of warts, duration of healing, and reducing the duration of complications in patients with external anogenital warts and is recommended as a complementary treatment for these patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antiproliferative activities of some the fruits, traditionally used in folk medicine. Therefore, the fruits of Fructus cynosbati (Rosehip), Rubus fruticosus (Blackberry), Sorbus torminalis (Wild service tree), Vaccinium myrtillus (Blueberry) and Vitis labrusca (Isabella grape) were used in the present study. Materials and MethodsMethanol extracts of the fruits were obtained and added to and HeLa (transformed) culture media at various concentrations. Taxol and DMSO were used as positive and negative controls, respectively. After 48 h of cell incubation, the cytotoxic effect of the extracts was assessed by MTT. Cell viability values were calculated for each group. The statistical analysis of the data was performed using unpaired t-test. p values less than 0.05 were considered significant.Results V.labrusca showed dose dependent cytotoxic activity against both cell lines. In additions, V.myrtillus and R.fruticosus extracts exhibited moderate cytotoxic effect on both cell lines at higher concentrations. Extracts of F.cynosbati and S.torminalis were found to decrease the cell viability in a dose-dependent manner in HeLa cells and the results were statistically significant (p <0.05). Additionally, S.torminalis extract was found to be the most effective extract against the HeLa cells. ConclusionThese results demonsrated that S.torminalis methanol extracts has a potent in vitro cytotoxic effect toward the human cervical cancer cell line HeLa. Further work needs to be done on isolation and purification of specific bioactive compounds in S.torminalis methanol extract.

Background/Aim. It is known that some members of the genus Convolvulus (C) L. are commonly used in Turkish folk medicine. These species are powerful in curing toothache and joint pains. Due to the limited information on the biological activities of C. aucheri, a species almost exclusively occurring in Turkey, we aimed to investigate the antioxidant and cytotoxic effects of three extracts obtained from the plant, as well as to characterize their phenolic profile. Methods. The anti-oxidant activity of the extracts was determined by using ABTS, NO, FRAP, phosphomolybdenum, and metal chelating assays. In addition, the bioactive compounds found in the extracts, such as total phenolics, flavonoids, and saponins, were determined. Cytotoxicity was assessed by using the CellTiter-Glo assay on HeLa and H1299 cancer cells. Results. The methanol extract of C. aucheri demonstrated the highest antioxidant activity as well as the highest phenolic, flavonoid, and saponin content. The high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis showed that the major phenolic compounds in the extract were chlorogenic acid, (+)-catechin, rosmarinic acid, and rutin. The methanolic extract obtained from the aerial parts of C. aucheri was found to interfere with the viability of HeLa cells, with an IC50 value of 14.22 ?g/mL being recorded. Conclusion. Our results showed that C. aucheri could be a good candidate as a novel and alternative natural antioxidant and antitumor source.
