Traumatic Fracture in a Patient with Osteopoikilosis

Abstract: We report a case of traumatic humeral neck fracture occurring in a patient with osteopoikilosis after a motorcycle accident. The radiograph revealed the fracture but also multiple bone lesions. A few years before, the patient had been operated for a maldiagnosed chondrosarcoma of the humeral head. Osteopoikilosis is a rare benign hereditary bone disease, whose mode of inheritance is autosomal dominant. It is usually asymptomatic and discovered incidentally on radiograph that shows the presence of multiple oste… Show more

“…Rare involvement of the vertebra, costa and cranium in osteopoikilosis, and normal bone scintigraphy is important in differentiating from metastasis. Normal laboratory findings and typical morphological features of opacities can assist in differentiating from mastocytosis, tuberous sclerosis and Paget's disease (4,7). In conclusion, osteopoikilosis is a frequently asymptomatic benign bone dysplasia.…”

“…The condition is seen at similar levels in both sexes, with an estimated incidence of 1/50.000 (3). Patients are generally asymptomatic and are identified incidentally during radiological examinations performed for different causes (4). Numerous well-defined sclerotic lesions are observed at radiological examination.…”

“…Außerdem zeigen sich bei der Osteopoikilie, wie bei unserem Patienten, unauffällige Laborparameter. Wie in unserem Fall gibt es in der Literatur Berichte über Zufallsbefunde einer Osteopoikilie im Rahmen der Bildgebung von posttraumatischen Frakturen [20,21]. Bei Festlegung der Diagnose Osteopoikilie sind weitere Untersuchungen nicht notwendig.…”
