Traumatic cerebellar hematoma in paediatric patient – a case report and review of literature

Abstract: Paediatric trauma is common emergency in emergency departments of hospitals worldwide. One of the uniqueness is the trauma sustained mostly in household areas and even the mode of injury is often subtle. Paediatric head injury is the one of the common reasons for children visiting the emergency department. Expert management and gentle care is an essential requirement in paediatric head injury cases. The management of the paediatric traumatic brain injury certainly depends upon the clinical conditions of patien… Show more

“…[1,4,5,9,13,14,17,18] Cerebellar contusions have been described to be less common in children than adults. [12,14] is study had an overall incidence rate of cerebellar contusions in pediatric patients of 0.6%, which is comparable to previously reported literature. e decreased area of the cisterna magna and the size of the contusion were two posterior morphological factors that were heavily correlated to the outcome.…”

“…[7] Posterior fossa hematoma is rare in children and the incidence of cerebellar hematoma is much rarer. [9] Asymptomatic traumatic cerebellar hematoma may undergo sudden deterioration of the neurological status which may be attributed to small reserve capacity of the posterior fossa. [10] Cerebellar contusions/hematoma presents in a variety of ways.…”

“…Posterior fossa hematoma is rare in children and incidence of cerebellar hematoma is much rarer. 22 Most frequent mode of injury is fall followed by road traffic accident. 23 Trauma is a leading cause of childhood head injury, with Center for Disease Control, stating about half a million emergency department visits in the United States is for traumatic brain injury for children aged 0 to 14 years, with 0 to 4 years being the most vulnerable group.…”
