Trauma Ultrasound in Civilian Tactical Medicine

Abstract: The term “tactical medicine” can be defined in more than one way, but in the nonmilitary setting the term tactical emergency medical services (TEMS) is often used to denote medical support operations for law enforcement. In supporting operations involving groups such as special weapons and tactics (SWAT) teams, TEMS entail executing triage, diagnosis, stabilization, and evacuation decision-making in challenging settings. Ultrasound, now well entrenched as a part of trauma evaluation in the hospital setting, ha… Show more

“…Retrospective analysis using posttraining surveys has confirmed that a significant percentage of trainees incorporated the new skills in their management paradigms and daily practices (unpublished data). Despite being a relatively new tool for trauma assessment, Focused Assessment of Sonography in Trauma has become a preferred screening tool in acute trauma management (11)(12)(13)(14) due to the ease of learning and nature of portable ultrasound deviceshand-held, highly portably battery-operated devices-especially because almost all field hospitals lack computed tomography scanners. Using a simple algorithm adopted by the course trainers, trainees have learned to use point-of-care ultrasonography to do a quick differential diagnosis and assessment of traumatic Tele-education offers another alternative to conventional medical education for students and trainees whose education was interrupted due to the war, siege, or unsafe travel (22).…”

“…In such situations, decision making regarding urgent treatment and evacuations is crucial and can interfere directly with the military mission 5. Technological changes have enabled ultrasound devices to become portable and more usable on the ground,6 and so an assessment of the utility of ultrasound devices would be of particular interest to isolated military general practitioners (GPs) 7. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the training of French military GPs in ultrasonography and to gather data about the use of ultrasound devices, in daily home-based practice and in isolated deployed military settings.…”
