Trauma Surveillance in Cape Town, South Africa

Abstract: The implementation of injury surveillance at Groote Schuur Hospital improved insights about injury risk based on demographics and neighborhood as well as access to service based on patterns of referral. “…Similar to the aforementioned study by Nicol et al, a higher percentage of patients who were male and under 40 years of age were mostly affected by injuries caused by violence 17 ; this age group was most affected by this phenomenon in Cali 15 . Therefore, it is necessary to emphasize prevention programs in this age group because they are the most vulnerable population to developing risk behaviors that contribute to traffic-related injuries and violence (both interpersonal and self-inflicted) 20 .…”

“…Patient demographic characteristics obser ved in the current study are in keeping with previous trauma studies in our setting, including a predominance of male patients aged <40 years. [6,7,25] However, the current study was among the first to describe the clinical diagnosis of orthopaedic trauma referrals, with previous studies focusing largely on mechanism of injury. [6,7,25] There were no retrospective records of telephone referrals against which the Vula referrals could be compared.…”

“…[6,7,25] However, the current study was among the first to describe the clinical diagnosis of orthopaedic trauma referrals, with previous studies focusing largely on mechanism of injury. [6,7,25] There were no retrospective records of telephone referrals against which the Vula referrals could be compared. It was therefore not possible to evaluate what proportion of all orthopaedic trauma and emergency referrals were received via Vula, how Vula response times compared with waiting times for landline referrals, or what proportion of landline referrals were managed with advice only.…”

“…Firearm injuries represent the sixth leading mechanism of injury managed by the Cape Town trauma system, Cape Town, South Africa (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8). The mortality rate associated with abdominal gunshot wounds (GSWs) remains high with many deaths occurring as a result of exsanguination and irreversible shock (9)(10)(11)(12).…”
