Drug utilization studies can provide direct insights into how a drug is used in real-world conditions and can give a rough estimate of the proportion of the study population treated with it. In the present work, we examined the consumption of permethrin 5% cream in the four provinces of Galicia (a Spanish autonomous community) and described the seasonal variability and the annual evolution of its consumption between 2018 and 2021. A descriptive, cross-sectional, and retrospective study of the consumption of this drug, expressed in defined daily dose per 1000 inhabitants per day (DID), was carried out. The results obtained revealed differences between the amounts consumed in the four Galician provinces (p < 0.001). No specific geographical pattern was observed; however, the results suggested a marked seasonality and a slightly increasing global trend in the consumption of permethrin 5% cream throughout the study period. Since the only authorized indication of this drug in the study area is the treatment of scabies, this work may give an idea of the epidemiological situation of the disease in Galicia and serve to establish public health strategies against this parasitosis.

INTRODUCTION The occurrence of outbreaks of scabies in hospitals has been serving as an alert to the importance of early diagnosis and correct approach by Occupational Health services. OBJECTIVES Review the literature on the diagnosis and treatment of scabies, as well as describe the approach taken by Occupational Health services in the face of scabies outbreaks. METHODOLOGY Review of the topic in the scientific database (PubMed), using the search terms “scabies”, “diagnosis”, “treatment” and “outbreak” anywhere in the text. Only reviews published in the last five years and available for full reading were included. RESULTS Scabies (commonly known as human scabies) is a parasitic skin infection caused by a mite that only infects humans, called Sarcoptes scabei, variety hominis. Transmission occurs by direct skin-to-skin contact or through contaminated fomites (as bedding, towels, among others). There are two clinical variants, the classic and the crusted (or Norwegian). First-line treatments are topical permethrin and oral ivermectin. Occupational Health plays a key role in addressing and controlling outbreaks in health institutions. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Early detection of infected individuals, with due isolation in the case of crusted scabies; adequate and frequent cleaning of clothes; simultaneous treatment of all patients, professionals and family members who may have been exposed and continuous surveillance of affected professionals until cure are key aspects for controlling outbreaks. La sarna es la infestación por el ácaro Sarcoptes scabiei hominis, las estimaciones de prevalencia de la sarna oscilan entre el 0,2% y el 71%. La sarna es endémica en muchos contextos tropicales con pocos recursos y se estima que su prevalencia media en los niños está entre el 5% y el 10%. La metodología utilizada para el presente trabajo de investigación, se enmarca dentro de una revisión bibliográfica de tipo documental, ya que nos vamos a ocupar de temas planteados a nivel teórico como es Escabiosis: diagnostico diferencial y tratamiento. La técnica para la recolección de datos está constituida por materiales electrónicos, estos últimos como Google Académico, PubMed, entre otros, apoyándose para ello en el uso de descriptores en ciencias de la salud o terminología MESH. La información aquí obtenida será revisada para su posterior análisis. La escabiosis por su forma de presentación en erupciones, es más que necesario un diagnostico diferencial (el prurito intenso de predominio nocturno y la presencia de los ácaros confirmarán al diagnóstico), ya que, si no hay un diagnóstico preciso, existe la posibilidad de la propagación de la enfermedad. En cuanto al tratamiento existen los tópicos y los orales, se destaca el uso de la permetrina como tratamiento tópico y la ivermectina como tratamiento vía oral, este último es usado desde hace muchos años con altas tasas de curación, ambos en su tipo son los primeros tratamientos de elección.
