Remote sensing archaeology in recent years has emphasized the use of high-precision and high-accuracy tools to achieve the detailed documentation of archaeological elements (drones, LIDAR, etc.). Satellite remote sensing has also benefited from an increase in the spatial and spectral resolution of the sensors, which is enabling the discovery and documentation of new archaeological features and sites worldwide. While there can be no doubt that a great deal is being gained via such “site detection” approaches, there still remains the possibility of further exploring remote sensing methods to analyse archaeological problems. In this paper, this issue is discussed by focusing on one common archaeological topic: the mapping of environmental resources used in the past and, in particular, the procurement of lithic raw material by hunter-gatherer groups. This is illustrated by showing how the combined use of Landsat 8 images and “ground-truthing” via focused field studies has allowed the identification of a number of potential chert sources, the major lithic resource used by coastal groups between 11,500–1,500 cal. BP, in a vast area of the Atacama Desert covering 22,500 km2. Besides discussing the case study, the strength of remote sensing techniques in addressing archaeological questions comprising large spatial scales is highlighted, stressing the key role they can play in the detection and study of specific environmental resources within challenging physical settings.

El nombre Calate puede provenir de la palabra Calato (o Calata), un término que se usa comúnmente en Perú y Bolivia y que significa desnudo. 6 Marcado justamente por la desnudez de su paisaje que es lo característico del desierto más absoluto de Atacama, aunque esta apariencia es sólo natural porque arqueológicamente Calate nos muestra una alta redundancia de la movilidad transdesértica prehispánica, con evidencias directas de la presencia de grupos de viajeros desde el Arcaico Medio (ca. 7000 AP) en adelante.En el presente artículo, desarrollamos la estrategia arqueológica que hemos estado implementando para aproximarnos a la organización social de la movilidad, sus prácticas constitutivas y el tráfico intercultural prehispá-nico desplegado en la vialidad internodal. Nuestro caso debe ser una españolización, pues estas lenguas no admiten el sufijo "-te", o siquiera la vocal "e". Es extraño, sin embargo, que se agregase esta partícula hispana pronominalizadora. Ambos significados de las lenguas indígenas pueden relacionarse filosóficamente como una evocación a la desnudez de carácter lítico: "desnudo como piedra". Por otra parte, y considerando otra posible etimología, en kunza ckalal es "quebrada, valle estrecho entre dos cerros", también Ckaâla se traduce como "amarillo" (Vaisse et al. 1896: 16). En esta lengua, sólo existe un caso admitido de sufijo "-te" (en un diccionario reciente, vide Vilte 2004), probablemente préstamo del español, tratándose el kunza -hasta donde se conoce-de una lengua que parece admitir esta vocal únicamente en algunos casos de su raíz. Hunter‐gatherer architectural practices are one of the main sources of data to understand the complex land use of these societies. In the hyperarid Atacama Desert coast (Northern Chile), hunter‐gatherers‐fishers developed standardized stone‐built architecture during the Late Archaic period (∼5,700–4,000 cal years BP), interpreted so far as sedentary villages or long‐term campsites. Nevertheless, the lack of site formation process studies and systematic chronostratigraphies defy such functional interpretations. To address these issues, we reconstruct the lifecycle of a recently discovered semisubterranean structure at the Zapatero site (~25°S, Taltal). Combining stratigraphy, micromorphology, faunal and lithic analysis, as well as radiocarbon dating, we evidence a broad sequence involving different processes: shell midden formation; a stone‐structure; a prepared burial pit; a burning event; a short‐term occupational episode; and the entombment of the structure. We interpret this sequence as ritualized actions related to commemorative and place‐making activities. Our work stresses the need for new research programs at the Atacama Desert coast, based on geoarchaeological approaches, to understand hunter‐gatherer‐fisher middening and architectural practices from the very materiality involved in stratigraphy‐making processes.
