Trapped particles in toroidal magnetic systems

Abstract: The review is devoted to the discussion of the role of trapped particles for equilibrium, diffusion and stability of plamas in toroidal magnetic devices. The motion of single particles in a toroidal magnetic field, the neoclassical transport processes due to the trapping of particles and trapped-particle instabilities in toroidal geometry are discussed. The correspondence between the neoclassical theory of diffusion, the turbulent transport processes due to the instabilities and the existing experimental Tokam… Show more

“…This is in contrast to the standard picture of (dissipative) TIMs, introduced by Kadomtsev and Pogutse in Ref. 35, which propagate in the electron diamagnetic direction and are thus unable to resonate with precession (trapped) ions.…”

“…(12) Hammett and Perkins, 1990;Chang and Callen, 1992;Dorland and Hammett, 1993;Beer and Hummett, 1996;and Waltz et al, 1997. There are many calculations for the nonadiabatic electron response based on the truncated chain of electron hydrodynamic equations (Braginskii, 1965;Horton and Varma, 1972) and on the kinetic equations Kadomtsev and Pogutse, 1979;. The general results are complicated by the distinction between the trapped and passing electron orbits and the collisionally broadened resonances of the electron guiding center drift orbits with the wave.…”

“…More detailed treatments of the clas-' sical theory, with extensive references, may be found in Braginskii (1965) and Kaufman (1966). The microscopic processes underlying neoclassical transport, as related to field geometry, are considered by Kadomtsev and Pogutse (1971), who also discuss a related class of plasma instabilities. Neoclassical transport is also considered in a review by Galeev and Sagdeev (1975), and in a relatively elementary reviem by Hazeltine (1975).…”
