Transversus Abdominis Plane Block Reduced Early Postoperative Pain after Robot-assisted Prostatectomy: a Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: Analgesic effect of transversus abdominis plane block (TAP block) in lower major abdominal laparoscopic surgery with about 5 cm of maximum surgical scar has been controversial. We hypothesized that TAP block has benefits, so the analgesic effect of TAP block after robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) was evaluated. One hundred patients were enrolled in this prospective, double-blinded, randomized study. Standardized general anesthesia with wound infiltration on camera port and fentanyl dose limit o… Show more

“…However, to reach a high success rate, this procedure requires training. 30 Due to its minimally invasive nature, the RALP is associated with decreased pain levels compared to open prostatectomy. 3 Immediately after RALP, the main source of pain/discomfort is abdominal, followed by catheter related, penile and bladder-spasm-related discomfort.…”

“…Moreover almost all patients who underwent TAP block got ambulation during the same operating day, probably due to the better pain control. 15 Moreover, the doses of Remifentanil and Propofol required to maintain surgical anesthesia were lower 16 Finally, even if TAP block required more anesthesia time, the procedure is not much time-consuming, showing a mean differences from the standard anesthesia of 3,59 min.…”
