Transverse testicular ectopia found by preoperative ultrasonography

Abstract: Transverse testicular ectopia, an extremely rare anomaly, is a deviation of testicular descent resulting in unilateral location of both testes, usually associated with an inguinal hernia, with the spermatic cord of the ectopic testes originating from the appropriate side. In most reported cases, the correct diagnosis was not made preoperatively. But we made a diagnosis of transverse testicular ectopia preoperatively by using the ultrasonography in patient with right-side inguinal hernia and left-side cryptorch… Show more

“…This is often obscured by the presence of a hernia on the affected side. Some cases, however, have been diagnosed radiologically by means of ultrasonography [3,8] and magnetic resonance imaging [9] and at laparoscopy [10,11] for the localisation of the undescended testis. In most of West Africa, surgical exploration remains the only tool for localising the undescended testis.…”

“…The first condition is known as undescended testis, and the second as testicular ectopia. Transverse testicular ectopia (TTE), which is also called crossed testicular ectopia, is an extremely rare anomaly in which both testes migrate toward the same hemiscrotum, and is usually associated with an inguinal hernia . During TTE, the spermatic vessels of the ectopic testis cross the midline and pass through the inguinal canal adjacent to the spermatic cord of the normal opposite testis.…”

“…Usually, the correct diagnosis cannot be made before surgical exploration. The diagnosis of TTE can be made preoperatively by close clinical examination and use of ultrasonography by an experienced sonographer [7]. Patients with TTE are at increased risk of malignant transformation with the overall incidence of malignant transformation of gonads approximately 18% [8].…”
