Transverse coupling property of beam from ECR ion sources

Abstract: Experimental evidence of the property of transverse coupling of beam from Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion source is presented. It is especially of interest for an ECR ion source, where the cross section of extracted beam is not round along transport path due to the magnetic confinement configuration. When the ions are extracted and accelerated through the descending axial magnetic field at the extraction region, the horizontal and vertical phase space strongly coupled. In this study, the coupling config… Show more

“…Beam emittance of an ECR ion source operating at higher microwave frequency and power, and higher magnetic fields, could be slightly higher but not significantly than at lower microwave frequency and power, and lower magnetic fields. The normalized-rms emittances measured with SECRAL at both 18 and 24 GHz operations are roughly the same as those measured with VENUS and RIKEN-SCECR [97][98][99][100].…”

“…According to Liouville's theorem, 4D emittance is invariant of the motion at constant energy and the coupling between the phase-space planes in LEBT lines are usually considered negligible with good approximation and therefore 2D emittances are constant. Due to the possible beam coupling in the case on non-linear fields, use of ECRIS, solenoid but also hexapole magnet and RF kicker, some inter-plane correlation moments become nonzero and the 2D projected emittances are modified [28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35].…”

“…Both experiments and simulations have proven the transverse coupling property of the beam from ECR ion sources [16][17]. The plasma electrode of an ECR ion source is generally located in the vicinity of a local magnetic field maximum, leading to extraction of ions from a strong magnetic field and subsequent beam formation in the descending axial magnetic field (halfsolenoid field).…”
