ABSTR AC TBackground Blood flow through the cavities of the heart and great vessels is pulsatile and is subject to time and multidirectional variations. To date, the recording of blood flow in multiple directions and phases has been limited. 4D-flow MRI offers advantages for the recording, visualization and analysis of blood flow.Method The status quo of the method was summarized through analysis with the PubMed database using the keywords "4D-flow MRI, phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging, MR flow imaging/visualization, MR flow quantification, 3 D cine (time-resolved) phase-contrast CMR, threedirectional velocity-encoding MRI". Methode Basierend auf einer Literaturrecherche in der PubMed-Datenbank mit den Begriffen "4D-Flow-MRI, Phasecontrast magnetic-resonance-imaging, MR-flow-imaging/-visualization, MR-Flow-quantification, 3D-cine (time-resolved) phase-contrast CMR, three-directional velocity-encoding MR" wurde der aktuelle Stand der Methode in dieser Über-sichtsarbeit zusammengefasst.Ergebnisse/Schlussfolgerung Diese Übersichtsarbeit fasst den aktuellen Stand der technischen Entwicklung der 4D-Flussmessung zusammen, diskutiert ihre Vor-und Nachteile und zeigt Anwendungsmöglichkeiten auf. Schließlich werden die wichtigsten Prinzipien und Parameter erklärt, sodass der Leser über die Anwendung der Methode, die möglichen klinischen Indikationen, die Auswertung verschiedener Parameter durch Post-processing-Methoden und die Limitationen des Verfahrens relevante Informationen erhält. During the past several years there has been extensive study of alternative MR acquisition strategies such as spiral and radial. Vastly undersampled imaging with projections (VIPR) is a three-dimensional (3D) radial acquisition that provides acceptable images while violating the Nyquist theorem by factors of up to several hundred. For applications like magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), VIPR provides sparse data sets with incoherent artifacts that satisfy the requirements of emerging reconstruction approaches like iterative image norm minimization (compressed sensing) and highly constrained back projection (HYPR). All of these tools can be used in combination with parallel imaging to provide extremely high acceleration factors in MRI. In this review we do not attempt to do justice to the many exciting developments in the general field of constrained reconstruction but focus on preliminary results using VIPR and HYPR for non-Cartesian, Nyquist-violating MRI and the extension of HYPR processing to a broad range of medical imaging applications in which the acquisitions satisfy the Nyquist theorem but lack sufficient signal-tonoise ratio (SNR), leading to the possibility of radiation reduction, increased ultrasound resolution and field-ofview, and improved dynamic display of radiotracers.

The detection of the association between nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF), a rare but potentially life‐threatening disease only encountered in patients with severely impaired renal function, and the previous administration of some Gd‐chelates has cast a shadow on the administration of Gd‐chelates in patients with chronic renal failure. So far, contrast‐enhanced MR‐angiography (MRA) was considered the best diagnostic modality in patients with suspected renal disease. This review explores the most appropriate use of renal MRA with a focus on newly developed nonenhanced MRA techniques. Nonenhanced MRA techniques mainly based on SSFP with ECG‐gating allow for acceptable spatial resolution to visualize at least the proximal parts of the renal arteries.
