“…It can have both psychological and physiological effects, with negative impacts including annoyance, hearing loss, cardiovascular stimulation and increased gastric secretion (Basner et al, 2014). With the increasing exposure time and levels of noise, these determinants of health are further influenced (Brown, 2015;Lan et al, 2020). An estimated 60,000 disability-adjusted life years are lost in western Europe through ischaemic heart disease due to exposure to environmental noise (WHO, 2011).…”

“…5 Road traffic noise and psychological ill-health at phase 3 and phase 4 (adjusted = age, marital status, social class and employment, smoking status, alcohol consumption, noise at work and physical activity at leisure) insurance claims for depressive illness have been found in previous studies [8,46]. Earlier analyses in this cohort did find a longitudinal association between road traffic noise and symptoms of anxiety [31] and a recent metaanalysis has found an association between transportation noise and anxiety [47]. Noise sensitivity may moderate the effects of road traffic noise on psychological illhealth [21,48], although there was some inconsistency between phases 3 and 4 and the confidence intervals were wide so that our analyses may have been underpowered.…”

“…We identified papers through searches of four databases, manual searches of relevant conference proceedings, referrals from colleagues, and review of papers identified in systematic reviews examining the mental health effects of noise exposure [ 2 , 11 , 12 , 23 , 24 , 25 ]. see Appendix A Table A1 shows the full list of conferences and search terms used to scan proceedings.…”
