Abstract

Arabidopsistransporter families for both nitrate and ammonium have been identified and characterized in some detail. Gene knockout studies have been very useful for identifying the physiological function of specific genes inArabidopsis. In the post‐genomic era, the identification of genes with orthologous transport functions in other plant species is now relatively easy. However, several key areas of nitrogen transport still require a much better understanding in the model plantArabidopsis, and some of these are described in this chapter.
