Transport properties of moderately disorderedUCu4Pd

Abstract: We present a detailed study on the (magneto)transport properties of as-cast and heat treated material UCu4Pd. We find a pronounced sample dependence of the resistivity ρ of as-cast samples, and reproduce the annealing dependence of ρ. In our study of the Hall effect we determine a metallic carrier density for all samples, and a temperature dependence of the Hall constant which is inconsistent with the Skew scattering prediction. The magnetoresistive response is very small and characteristic for spin disorder s… Show more

“…In particular, for heavy fermion systems crystallographic disorder is known to affect the magnetic ground state properties [7]. Moreover, disorder has been proposed to significantly affect the physics close to magnetic instabilities, with for instance non-Fermi liquid behavior occurring in the vicinity of a quantum critical point [8][9][10][11][12][13][14].…”

“…For this, preferably single crystalline materials should be studied. Further, heat treating the material is a common procedure to reduce the level of structural disorder in crystalline materials [13,22,44]. This approach assumes that disorder is the result of a comparatively fast cooling procedure during material production causing local strain or stoichiometry fluctuations, both which can be removed through annealing.…”

“…The present finding of quantum correction to the electrical resistivity in materials with strong electronic correlations is somewhat reminiscent to the observations reported for uraniumbased compounds URh 2 Ge 2 , UCu 4 Pd and U 2 CoSi 3 (Refs. [23][24][25]). Recently, analogous effect was found for a cerium-bearing alloy Ce 2 Co 0.4 Rh 0.4 Si 3.2 (Ref.…”

“…A second-order antiferromagnetic transition in pure UCu 5 is suppressed from 16.5 to 0 K at around x % 1 in UCu 5Àx Ni x . In the case of UCu 5Àx Pd x there has been extensive study of the nFl behavior around the QCP [2][3][4][5]; however, due to the partial sublattice ordering involved [3,6] the role of strong disorder at a QCP remains uninvestigated. We report here investigations of the magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity in UCu 5Àx Ni x for 0.75 6 x 6 1.2.…”

“…We report here investigations of the magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity in UCu 5Àx Ni x for 0.75 6 x 6 1.2. Recent investigations [2] of the electrical resistivity of UCu 5Àx Pd x have determined that the measured behavior is primarily caused by the disorder-induced localization effects, rather than by the intrinsic electronic behavior associated with the quantum critical fluctuations near the QCP. The goal of the present work is to investigate what influence strong disorder at the QCP has on both the resistivity and susceptibility of UCu 5Àx Ni x as the companion investigation to the study of the specific heat in [1].…”
