Quality of Service (QoS) for inter-networks requires a two-tier approach to separate the end-to-end communication from the QoS provisioning within each autonomous system. However, the interaction between both is not standardized. Furthermore, the solutions for both tiers lack either scalability, flexibility, or QoS guarantees. Our paper presents a combination of "Forwarding on Gates" (FoG) as inter-network and "Traffic Engineering Middleware for Ethernet" (TEME) as intra-network techniques. This combination incorporating a recursive layer model separates the layers based on their scope and not on their functionality. This paper proposes a single interface used by all layers. Furthermore, the same interface is used by applications in order to signal their QoS requirements. This design allows supporting QoS in a more consistent way as compared to the ISO/OSI layer model. The paper outlines the proposal theoretically and demonstrates the advantages with an example.

Communication technology improvements have inspired the idea of connecting almost every things to the Internet: from home appliances, medical devices, and cars, to large infrastructures. A unified and secure network of these things is almost a dream because the Internet has not had this goal from the beginning; protocols have been implemented and then secured, and then extended to new domains. This has been the cause of many vulnerabilities so far. In this paper, we take a fundamental look at the inherited architectural security issues of Internet of Things (IoT) which have raised serious security concerns due to its overwhelming number of nodes. Then, we investigate Recursive InterNetwork Architecture (RINA), a very promising network architecture, as a design solution; we demonstrate how RINA can specifically address security challenges of IoT networks, and how it mitigates their common attacks. Moreover, we will show how RINA can provide other features which are now mentioned as the future trend in IoT.

The Recursive InterNetwork Architecture (RINA) is a general architecture for all forms of computer networking, based on a single type of programmable layer that recurs as many times as required by the network designer. The recursion and programmability aspects of RINA are key to design flexible, heterogeneous networks while still bounding their complexity. In this paper we show how the programmability enabled by the RINA architecture can be exploited in practice by means of a Software Development Kit (SDK) developed for IRATI, the open source RINA implementation. A proof of concept validation of the SDK is carried out by experimenting with multiple policies in a distributed cloud network scenario.
