Transport of momentum and scalar in turbulent flows with anisotropic dispersive waves

Abstract: Most geophysical flows encompass turbulence and internal and/or Rossby waves. We demonstrate that these two different classes of waves cause remarkably similar anomalies in the turbulent transport. While all scales in both types of flows contribute to the momentum diffusion, the vertical (diapycnal) scalar diffusion in stratified flows and lateral diffusion in β‐plane turbulence can be carried out only by turbulent eddies whose size is smaller than the thresholds of turbulence anisotropization. Beyond these th… Show more

“…Larger, wave-dominated scales make no contribution to κ z and so it becomes scale-independent being sustained by the turbulent scales only [1]. This result demonstrates that κ z has correct asymptotic behaviour in the limit of strong stable stratification and provides a new interpretation of the EBO model.…”

“…Any vector mode u α and scalar mode T can be represented as u α = u < α + u > α and T = T < + T > . For the fast modes, Re = O (1). Ensemble averaging of the fast modes over the shell D > shrinks the domain of definition from D = D < ∪ D > to D < .…”

“…Recent investigations have revealed two more attributes of the zonostrophic regime-nonlinear waves, or zonons , and the scale independency of the coefficient of lateral, or cross-jet eddy diffusivity (Sukoriansky et al 2009). Figure 1 provides schematic representation of the transition from geostrophic to zonostrophic turbulence as well as the main features of the latter regime.…”

“…They have been observationally analysed using different approaches (Ralph et al, 1997;Doyle and Durran, 2002;Viana et al, 2009Viana et al, , 2010Viana et al, , 2012Sun et al, 2012;Román-Cascón et al, 2015a). All these studies illustrate the difficulties in determining the origin and formation mechanisms of GWs, their importance as sources of momentum and heat transport (Sukoriansky et al, 2009;Fernando and Weil, 2010) and the necessity of their accurate parameterization in NWP models (Fritts, 2003;Kim and Hong, 2009;Belušić and Mahrt, 2012;Nappo, 2012;Sun et al, 2015b).…”
