Transparent Metal–Organic Framework/Polymer Mixed Matrix Membranes as Water Vapor Barriers

Abstract: Preventing the permeation of reactive molecules into electronic devices or photovoltaic modules is of great importance to ensure their life span and reliability. This work is focused on the formation of highly functioning barrier films based on nanocrystals (NCs) of a water-scavenging metal-organic framework (MOF) and a hydrophobic cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) to overcome the current limitations. Water vapor transmission rates (WVTR) of the films reveal a 10-fold enhancement in the WVTR compared to the substr… Show more

“…Generally, plastic films can be composed of a range of materials . Plastic films with a combination of properties such as gas permeability, transparency, gas capture ability, tensile strength, and eco friendliness serve unique purposes and show great utility . The polyethylene family accounts for more than 80 % of plastic films that are used in day‐to‐day activities.…”

“…Zr-fumarate-MOF has recently been the subject of scientific interest due to its high water stability 39 , as well as its potential for green synthesis 40 and facile shaping through direct monolith formation by a gel approach 41 . The material has a remarkably steep water adsorption isotherm at low relative pressure 37 , which led to its possible application as a water scavenger membrane 42 , or in a water harvesting device which would capture water from air in low relative humidity environments 43 . This low pressure condensation step for water has highlighted the contribution of defects in shifting the adsorption isotherm, an effect arising from cooperative interactions and initial clustering of water molecules at defect sites 44 .…”

“…23,24 However, these materials are usually unstable to moisture, and hence, their application in water-based elds has been limited. There have been several studies (the effects of coating, 25 compositing, 26 and carbonization on MOFs [27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34] ) to overcome this problem. Notably, carbonization of MOFs is of great interest because the MOFs contains both a metal and a carbon sources for the preparation of composite materials.…”
