This article is devoted to the characterization of a new Co-W-Al alloy prepared by an aluminothermic reaction. This alloy is used for the subsequent preparation of a special composite nanopowder and for the surface coating of aluminum, magnesium, or iron alloys. Due to the very high temperature (2000 °C–3000 °C) required for the reaction, thermite was added to the mixture. Pulverized coal was also added in order to obtain the appropriate metal carbides (Co, W, Ti), which increase hardness, resistance to abrasion, and the corrosion of the coating and have good high temperature properties. The phase composition of the alloy prepared by the aluminothermic reaction showed mainly cobalt, tungsten, and aluminum, as well as small amounts of iron, titanium, and calcium. No carbon was identified using this method. The microstructure of this alloy is characterized by a cobalt matrix with smaller regular and irregular carbide particles doped by aluminum.

Materials known as Nd:YAG are crystalline materials of the cubic system made from the neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet, which, among others, have excellent optical properties. Nd:YAG four-level laser devices are frequently used in both the health and industrial sectors. In this study, a simple and inexpensive alternative to manufacturing Nd:YAG materials through solid state reactions following powder processing routes was proposed. For this, an intense mixture of the precursor materials (Al2O3 and Y2O3) was carried out, followed by the addition of neodymium atoms to improve the optical properties of the resulting material. High-energy mechanical mixing of the precursor powders resulted in submicron particles with good size distributions of the powders. The advance of YAG formation was monitored by intermediate phase formation during heat treatment through interrupted tests at different temperatures and analysis by X-ray diffraction. From this analysis, it was found that reaction for the formation of the desired YAG is completed at 1500 °C. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses determined the presence of functional groups corresponding to the YAG. Finally, the study employing optical emission spectroscopy showed wavelengths in agreement with those of the electronic structure of the elements of the synthesized Nd:YAG.

Despite the growing popularity and promising properties of aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) among other transparent conducting oxides (TCOs), modification of AZO with a suitable nano-catalyst can help to enhance its electrocatalytic properties. In this study, the surface of AZO is decorated with palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) by simply Pd ion capturing on bare AZO from an aqueous solution of K 2 PdCl 4 and successive reduction with NaBH 4 to enhance the electrocatalytic properties toward water oxidation. The effect of K 2 PdCl 4 concentration is optimized for optimum PdNPs-modified AZO (PdNPs-AZO) electrodes for electrochemical water oxidation. The surface morphology, elemental composition, and electrical properties of the prepared PdNPs-AZO were examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and four-in-line probe, respectively. The PdNPs-AZO electrodes, prepared with various concentrations of Pd precursors, exhibited a significant change in terms of electrode sheet resistance and resistivity from each other. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry were conducted in a 0.1 M NaOH (aq.) solution to achieve quantitative information about the electrodes and electrochemical reactions toward water oxidation. The PdNPs-AZO prepared with 5.0 mM K 2 PdCl 4 exhibited optimum behavior toward water oxidation with the starting oxidation potential of 625.7 mV vs. Ag/AgCl and current density of 13.8 mA cm -2 at 1.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl.
