In this work, a process chain for the fabrication of dense zirconia parts will be presented covering the individual steps feedstock compounding, 3D printing via Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) and thermal postprocessing including debinding and sintering. A special focus was set on the comprehensive rheological characterization of the feedstock systems applying high-pressure capillary and oscillation rheometry. The latter allowed the representation of the flow situation especially in the nozzle of the print head with the occurring low-shear stress. Oscillation rheometry enabled the clarification of the surfactant’s concentration, here stearic acid, or more general, the feedstocks composition influence on the resulting feedstock flow behavior. Finally, dense ceramic parts (best values around 99 % of theory) were realized with structural details smaller than 100 µm.

A UV‐curable resin containing alumina (Al2O3) powder and platelets was developed and characterized using a proof‐of concept tape‐casting system and trialed on a commercially available 3D‐printing platform (Admatec Admaflex 130). The influence of solids loading and solids platelet fraction on resin viscosity and depth of cure was investigated. Resins containing up to 40 vol% solids loading at platelet fractions up to 50% were found to have sufficiently low viscosity for tape casting and cure depths ranging from 0.29 to 0.39 mm. Alumina platelets were observed to lower ink viscosity but also reduce shear thinning behavior compared to inks containing only powder. Printability of inks was assessed by layered tape casting, and verified with a trial build on an Admaflex 130. Due to the low solids loading of the resin, hot pressing at 1300°C and 66 MPa was employed to sinter specimens containing no platelets and 15% platelet fractions, yielding specimens with near theoretical densities (99.7%) and average grain sizes of 0.96 µm and 0.83 µm, respectively. Alignment before and after sintering was assessed by SEM and XRD, with lotgering factors of 0.045±0.005 and 0.114 measured in the green and sintered specimens, respectively.

Additive manufacturing based on direct ink writing (DIW) opens a novel means to prepare transparent ceramics, which can comprise of both complex structures and multiple functional phases. However, there still remains a vital challenge to obtain a stable and printable aqueous ceramic slurry with high solids loading, which is important for forming high quality transparent ceramics. Therefore, we report a fabrication method by using celluloses for enhancing the plasticity of the aqueous YAG ceramic slurry with high solids loading up to 52 vol. %, by which both of the printability of ceramic slurries and the optical quality of transparent ceramics have been considerably improved. In the example, the in-line transmittance at 1064 nm for a 1.2 mm thick YAG ceramic can approach about 81.5%. This research provides a facile DIW method for preparing transparent ceramic from water - based slurry.
