Abstract: During the Iranian Revolution of 1978/9, the influence of public intellectuals was widespread. Many espoused a vision of Iran freed from the influences of 'Westtoxification', inspired by Heideggerian concepts of anti-Western nativism. By following the intellectual journey of the Iranian philosopher Ahmad Fardid, Ali Mirsepassi offers in this book an account of the rise of political Islam in modern Iran. “…To navigate these challenges, I had to critically explore the history of the interactions between Europeans and Iranians within the political, economic, racial and intercultural educational contexts such as the Hijrat. I justified the relevance of my project to colonisation and postcolonial theory by elaborating on the fraught relationship between Iran and its major Western political adversaries (Borjian, 2013;Matin-Asgari, 2018;Mirsepassi, 2000Mirsepassi, , 2017Mirsepassi & Faraji, 2018). This fraught relationship is mainly the result of what is considered to be the colonial endeavours of Western political adversaries in the Middle East.…”

“…Since World War 2, Iranians have been positioned at the heart of the political and ideological clashes between Iran and its Western political adversaries (Zibakalam, 2016(Zibakalam, , 2019. The outcomes of these positionings and clashes include the formation of an anti-colonial discourse, subsequent resistance and a sensitivity of many Iranians to the West (Mirsepassi, 2017;Pesaran, 2008). Being sensitised to Western colonial and hegemonic attitudes that are the product of European empires is, therefore, central to postcoloniality (Bhabha, 1994;Gandhi, 2019;Loomba, 2015;Said, 1978Said, , 1994Spivak, 1988Spivak, , 2010Spring, 2008).…”

“…58 In his Dar Khedmat va Khianat-e Roshanfekran ('On the Service and Treason of Intellectuals'), Āl-e Ahmad extended his critique of Westernisation to secularism and liberalism, excoriating Iranian modernists for critiquing Islam and the clerical establishment. 59 In Āl-e Ahmad's assessment, of all the cultural institutions it was the education system that had become the most Westoxicated. Āl-e Ahmad lambasted Iranian scholars for disregarding the West's intrusion into Iranian affairs and for being complicit in the Western imperial project.…”

“…2 Yet his National Socialism is inadequate for a full understanding of the political meaning of his thought. One need think only of the political left's appropriation of it (Hemming 2012, Rorty 1991, and his influence in Iran and other non-Western contexts (Love 2017, Mirsepassi 2017, Shari'ati 1980. 3 Thus, as with reducing Marxian political thought to Bolshevism, the old debate about Heidegger's National Socialism is too narrow a basis for assessing his enduring political import.…”
