In social psychology, stereotypes have generally been viewed as overgeneralized beliefs about social groups in society. Although stereotypes—especially those that are negative—tend to be recognized as contributing to prejudice and discrimination of marginalized communities, they are often conceptualized as containing a “kernel of truth.” Meanwhile, there has been relatively little consideration of the historical and cultural origins of racial stereotypes. This is an important oversight given that stereotypes have and continue to be used as a means to excuse and reinforce the systemic oppression of communities of color. Thus, the current paper uses a historical framework to review major stereotypes that have targeted communities of color throughout U.S. history, with a focus on stereotypes of Black people. In doing so, we conceptualize racial stereotypes as propaganda that have historically functioned to support oppressive societal systems in the U.S. by both (a) shaping public perceptions and expectations and (b) by influencing the thoughts and behavior of members of stereotyped groups. By situating stereotypes within their historical and cultural frames, readers can recognize the way stereotypes reinforce systems of oppression. We conclude with research implications and encourage stereotyping scholars to foreground the social construction of stereotypes and the function that they serve by contextualizing their work in the social and historical context in which stereotypes emerged.

The Intellectual Labor of Digital Black Feminist Enclaves in Hashtag Construction, Reception, and Stratification Online

While existing research has examined counterpublics in hashtag activism, little attention is given to digital enclaves that emerge when mainstream media disregards the voices of these communities. This paper helps us understand the process of hashtag activism that derives from the intellectual labor of digital enclaves. I examine the digital Black feminist enclave that emerged through the Black online magazine, Ebony, mobilizing #MuteRKelly on Twitter. #MuteRKelly brings attention to musical artist's, Robert Sylvester Kelly, sexual exploitation of Black women and girls. I combined digital Black feminist theory with critical technocultural discourse analysis to demonstrate how this Black feminist enclave maximized Ebony's interface to defy ideologies of capitalism, racism, colonialism, and sexism that underpin the music industry's public allegiance to Black women’s exploitation on and offline. This digital Black feminist enclave solidified in the rhetorical and technical demand of #MuteRKelly, for (1) the music industry to dispatch all financial, commercial, and social engagements with Kelly and resist negative ideologies of Black women inscribed in his musical lineage, (2) for mainstream media to eradicate discourse that romanticizes domestic violence from celebrity Black men, and (3) for survivors’ to take space in the digital sphere to assemble a grapevine rhetorically committed to advocacy aimed at legal justice and increased protection for Black women and girls. It is important for scholars to trace the lineage of internet practices that traverse to hashtag activism and for us to look at the digital enclaves that produce these practices.

In recent years, there has been an increase in mental health struggles among Black girls, with concurrent increases in interpersonal violence in this group. However, there has been limited research into the structural, environmental, and psychosocial risk factors associated with these increases. A lack of understanding of these dynamics has left a gap in the implementation of targeted mental health and violence prevention/mitigation strategies for this sociomedically vulnerable population. Using semistructured interviews with staff at five high schools in the metropolitan Chicago area (n = 32), including teachers (n = 14), administrators (n = 9), and security officials (n = 9), we assessed perspectives on the mental health profiles and violence involvement of Black teen girls using abductive analysis and constant comparative methods. Respondents consistently indicated that violence was either more frequent among Black girls or felt more intractable, relative to (Black) males or other non-Black female students. Primary risk factors discussed included Black girls' recurrent exposure to neighborhood deprivation and limited psychosocial and institutional support. Black girls who perpetrate or are victims of violence face complex identity formation challenges that are amplified by mental health challenges resulting from broader racial and gendered structures. School and community-based interventions must consider the intersectional complexities that entrench mental illness and violence in this population as a clustered co-occurring phenomenon, focusing on structural and in-school supports and adult stakeholder trainings around implicit bias and cultural humility.
