Transmural healing evaluated by magnetic resonance enterography in paediatric patients with Crohn's disease receiving maintenance treatment with biologics

Abstract: Background:The optimal treatment goal in Crohn's disease (CD) is endoscopic healing (EH). However, transmural healing (TH) facilitated by the development and increasing performance of magnetic resonance enterography (MRE) is emerging as a potential treatment goal.Aims: To assess TH rates after 1 year of treatment by MRE and its relationship with EH in paediatric patients with CD receiving anti-tumour necrosis factor (TNF) agents, and to investigate factors associated with TH after 1 year of treatment. Methods: … Show more

“…The radiologists were blinded to the clinical information and endoscopic scores of the enrolled patients. To evaluate the degree of TH, the magnetic resonance index of activity (MaRIA) score was assessed (14,(25)(26)(27)(28).…”

“…TH is evaluated by measuring bowel wall thickness and signal intensity using a noninvasive measurement tool, ultrasonography, or magnetic resonance enterography (MRE). Recently, some studies have compared EH and TH, with all suggesting that TH could be a potential treatment endpoint in CD (11)(12)(13)(14).…”

“…The concept of transmural healing (TH) has been proposed as an indicator of deep clinical remission of CD and as a predictor of favorable treatment goals and endpoints [4][5][6][7]. Advances in clinical imaging with magnetic resonance enterography (MRE), computed tomography enterography (CTE), multispectral optoacoustic tomography, and intestinal ultrasound (US) have enabled the monitoring of patients for treatment effectiveness [8,9]. Patients with TH have fewer flares and lower rates of hospitalization and surgery with more favorable long-term outcomes than MH [2,10,11].…”
