Transmitting and Gathering Streaming Data in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks Within Expected Network Lifetime

Abstract: Using multimedia sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can significantly enhance the capability of WSNs for event description. Different kinds of holes can easily appear in WSNs. How to efficiently transmit multimedia streaming data and bypass all kinds of holes is a challenging issue. Moreover, some applications do not need WSNs to work for a long lifetime, e.g. monitoring an erupting volcano. These applications generally expect that WSNs can provide continuous streaming data during a relatively sho… Show more

“…Simulation was conducted with following parameters The proposed solution is compared with two other cross layer architectures proposed in [1] and [19] and detailed in survey. We measured following parameters The proposed solution has higher throughput than [1] and [19]. The higher throughput is attributed to shorter hop for the travel of packet from node to sink.…”

“…It has been proved that a database oriented approach is helpful to manage the dynamic nature of WSN data for those applications [10], [11] and hence it motivated the researchers to treat WSN as a distributed database. Accordingly, WSN can be modelled as a distributed database where sensor devices act as data sources and stores the data with the sensor in the form of database across the network in distributed manner [12], [13].…”

“…Since sensors are usually battery powered, their operation time (lifetime) are strictly constrained by the battery capacity. In recent years, many energy conserving strategies for WSNs have been proposed to prolong the network lifetime 3, including energy efficient packet forwarding schemes 4, 5 and multimedia streaming transmission schemes 6, etc. In this paper, we concentrate on sleeping management schemes for topology control in WSNs 7, 8, 9, 10.…”
