Transmissive resonator optic gyro based on silica waveguide ring resonator

Abstract: A transmissive resonator optic gyro (TROG) based on silica waveguide ring resonator with improved long-term bias stability is reported in this paper. The modeling of a transmissive resonator used in optic gyro is carried out. The polarization dependence of resonator and the influences of phase modulator's residual intensity modulation on the gyro output are analyzed. The resonator is simulated, designed, fabricated, tested and used to build up a TROG prototype. A bias stability of 0.22°/s over one hour test wi… Show more

“…The clockwise (CW) and the counterclockwise (CCW) light from the waveguide-type ring resonator (WRR) were detected by respectively using photodetector PD1 and PD2. The WRR in a planar lightwave circuit (PLC) is usually coupled with fiber in a RMOG [12,13], which is shown in figure 2. The coupling points will introduce backreflection noise due to the mismatch of refractive index between waveguide and air, which is shown in figure 1 as points A and B. r 1 and r 2 are reflectivity of point A and B, respectively.…”

“…It integrates individual optical elements into a common substrate, which immensely enhances the robustness and reliability of the RMOG. A lot of progress has been achieved since RMOGs were proposed [9][10][11][12][13][14]. The integrated micro-ring resonator, as the key rotation-sensing element in the RMOG, is a closed coupler commonly constructed by planar waveguides.…”

“…For planar waveguide ring resonators, to reduce the propagation loss is still an ongoing research area. The achieved finesses of mostly explored integrated micro-ring resonator used in RMOGs are less than 100 [9][10][11][12][13][14].…”

“…Chip-scale optical inertial rotation sensors 1 2 3 4 5 6 based on Sagnac effect 7 have distinct advantages in aspects of physical size, weight, power consumption, cost, compatibility with technology for producing microelectronics, and have the most potential to become the next generation optical gyroscopes after ring laser gyro (RLG) and fiber optic gyro (FOG). Nevertheless, on-chip optical gyroscope with tiny area is bound to accumulate less phase shift and less sensitive than RLG and FOG.…”
