Transmissive Fiber Bragg Grating-Based Delay Line Interferometer for RZ-OOK to NRZ-OOK Format Conversion

Abstract: We propose a return-to-zero on-off keying (RZ-OOK) to non-return-to-zero (NRZ) OOK conversion scheme based on a transmissive phase-modulated fiber Bragg grating (PM-FBG). The PM-FBG has a spectrum similar to the combination of a delay line interferometer and a narrow band optical filter, which is designed and synthesized using numerical optimization algorithm. The coupling strength of the PM-FBG is almost uniform and the grating period varies along the fiber length according to the optimization method. The des… Show more

“…A number of devices based on PM-FBG have been designed and demonstrated through simulation and experiments, such as virtual Gires-Tournois etalons [16], pulse shaper [17], and photonic temporal differentiator [18]. In particular, PM-FBGs with a length of 9 cm applied to delay line interferometer [19] and format conversion [20] have been fabricated using a UV laser direct-writing system, where the gratings are created pitch by pitch, and the coupling coefficient profile and the varied period are realized by controlling the on/off of an acoustic optical modulator and moving the phase mask/fiber.…”

“…The optical modulation characteristic of a transmissive optical fibre sensor was implemented in designing and fabricating a transmissive phase‐modulated fibre Bragg grating for return‐to‐zero on‐off keying (RZ‐OOK) to non‐return‐to‐zero (NRZ) OOK conversion [27]. A transmissive optical fibre sensor based on localised surface plasmon resonance was designed and fabricated using gold nanoparticles.…”

“…Recently, visual light communication (VLC) (Che et al 2018;Gao et al 2019) is gaining interest to provide high-speed communications with the sensors (Verma et al 2019) and end devices. To enhance the security of communication and provide multiple access over the OFC, Li-Fi (Wang and Haas 2015), and VLC optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) techniques are used, it uses On-Off keying (OOK) (Liu et al 2019) to represent binary data, 1 is represented by an optical (light on) pulse and 0 is represented by no light (off) pulse. The OCDMA system requires optical orthogonal codes (OOCs).…”
