Transmission Performance of 40 Gb/s PM Duobinary Signals due to Fiber Nonlinearities in DWDM Systems Using VSB Filtering Techniques

Abstract: We investigate theoretically the tolerance of 40 Gbps phase-modulated (PM) duobinary signals using a vestigial sideband (VSB) filter on impairments which occurred in dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) systems, compared to the conventional duobinary signals. Our simulation results show that PM duobinary signals can t have the gain on the spectral efficiency achieved ' by utilizing the VSB filtering technique. In order to increase the spectral efficiency, they indispensably require to be transmitted a… Show more

“…This equation was solved via the split-step Fourier method (SSFM) [14]. We performed numerical simulations to investigate the combined effect of fiber dispersion and SPM [14][15][16] on single-and two-channel SCM signals. The fiber launching power entering an SMF was adjusted from 0 to 10 dBm by the first EDFA and optical attenuator before transmission to simultaneously confirm the fiber nonlinear effect.…”

“…Some photonic waveguide based DEMUX designs are reported by researchers [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Because of their weak optical confinement, these components are not of interest of the researchers, whereas more compact designs are possible based on photonic crystal technology [7,8].…”

“…However, when either the subcarrier frequency or the required transmission distance is large, the quality of the signal becomes degraded due to the impairment from the optical fiber channel such as the fiber nonlinearities [4] and the dispersion-induced power penalty (DIPP) that alters the first null point of the fiber transmission response dependent upon the subcarrier frequencies and transmission distance [5]. Although the self-phase modulation (SPM)-induced fiber dispersion compensation effect in millimeter-wave optical transmission systems has been investigated [6,7], the analysis has been limited to transmission systems with a single subcarrier.…”
