“…In practice, seed infection incidences of 0.01% are tolerated for direct seeded field crops, whereas for transplanted crops an even lower infection incidence can cause economic damage (Schaad et al 1980;Roberts et al 2007). Black rot due to the use of seed infected by Xcc can be influenced by various factors such as environmental conditions (Ignatov et al 1999a;Kastelein et al 2014), the bacterial strain (Guy et al 2013;Chidamba and Bezuidenhout 2012;Kastelein et al 2014), the genotype used (Ignatov et al 1998(Ignatov et al , 1999bvan der Wolf et al 2013), as well as pathogen densities. Seeds vacuum-infiltrated with Xcc suspensions as low as 1.4 cfu per seed were able to cause 1-4% black rot diseased plants (Roberts et al 1999).…”
