Transmission of Opisthorchis viverrini, Schistosoma mekongi and soil-transmitted helminthes on the Mekong Islands, Southern Lao PDR

Abstract: BackgroundPrevalence of Opisthorchis viverrini, Schistosoma mekongi and soil-transmitted helminths (STH) remains high in Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), despite control efforts including mass-drug administration, education and communication campaigns. New approaches are required to advance helminth control.MethodsAn ecohealth study was conducted on two Mekong islands in Southern Laos. Demographic and behavioural data were collected by questionnaire. Human and animal reservoir stools were examined. … Show more

“…Swamps are known for their high fish productivity. Fish species composition varies between water bodies, but the major species belong to the carp family, Cyprinidae, and include Cirrhinus jullieni, Barbodes gonionotus, Puntioplites proctozysron, Micronema sp., Channa striata, Hemibagrus nemurus, Oxyeleotris marmorata and Clupeichthys aesarnensis (Sayasone et al, 2007;Vonghachack et al, 2017). Besides the various fish species, other aquatic animals such as frogs, small shrimps, crabs, tadpoles, clams and snails also make an important contribution to the wildcaught freshwater diet of the Isaan population (Na Mahasarakarm, 2007).…”

“…This is concordant with the finding that the "...majority of the infected cases (64.3%) were found from the immigrants of northeastern Thailand (the fluke-prevalent region), providing 2.28-2.42 times higher infectious risk on average against the local residents." The prevalence of O. viverrini, Schistosoma mekongi, and soil-transmitted helminths (STH) is also high in the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), and animal infections rates, as well as water, might serve as a reservoir for humans [172]: "O. viverrini and S. mekongi infection rates among dogs and cats were 25.0% and 14.7%, respectively. Of the cats tested, 53.1% were infected with O. viverrini.…”
