Link Adaptation is a radio resource management technique that assesses the channel conditions and selects a transport mode, from a set of possible options, which is optimised for these conditions according to a predefined criterion. The optimum transport mode is commonly determined so as to maximise the throughput. Although this approach may be appropriate for best-effort services, its suitability for multimedia services, usually characterised by tight delay and error performance constraints, has been questioned. As a result, a number of alternative algorithms have been proposed in the literature. In this context, this paper presents and evaluates in a dynamic radio environment several Link Adaptation algorithms designed to enhance the provision of delay-and error-sensitive multimedia packet-data services over wireless systems. The obtained results demonstrate that significant improvements in terms of throughput, transmission delay, error performance and operation of Link Adaptation itself can be obtained with the proposed schemes.

The transmission of encoded video streams over heterogeneous networks, characterized by congestion losses in wired links and high bit error rate in the wireless channel, is under consideration in this paper. First of all, it is necessary to make a distinction between the different kinfs of losses to achieve a high channel utilization. Then, when dealing with wireless losses, the robustness of the encoded stream has to be improved. This article shows an easy way of implementing a global adaptive algorithm for wireless networks. It proposes a new algorithm to adequate the parameters of video error resilience tools to the changing characteristics of the wireless channel. The aim of this algorithm is guaranteing the quality of the video;Simplicity is the key, as the receiver of the video stream will be a handheld device (i.e. PDA, mobile phone, etc.) with limited processing capacity.

Optimising delivery of video codecs such as MPEG-4 is vital to ensure that acceptable quality can be offered to 3G network customers. The error prone nature of mobile channels means that the video codec that is employed must be fairly robust. In the past, such research has required alteration to existing standards. Given the imminent implementation of 3G technologies, changing the standards is not a convenient option. This paper presents a technique for altering MPEG-4 encoding parameters to increase the error robustness of the output bitstream. It exploits the fact that frames with a high degree motion are often more sensitive to error than those with low amounts of motion. Using a simple model, the video packet length and number of AIR blocks are varied according to the amount of motion in a frame. Simulations using a GPRS channel are presented to confirm the benefits of the proposed scheme.
