Transmission of Human T Cell Lymphotropic Virus Type I by Blood Transfusion before and after Mass Screening of Sera from Seropositive Donors

Abstract: The human T cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is transmitted by blood transfusions that contain cell components as one of the virus transmission modes. We carried out mass screening of sera from seropositive donors by a gelatin particle agglutination test to prevent the spread of HTLV-I by transfusion. Seroconversion rates were compared before and after screening. The results show a remarkable decrease in the rate of infection from 53.6 to 0.9%. Therefore, it is certain that screening by the agglutinatio… Show more

(1 988 to 1989) In November 1988, we mailed the survey form used in the second step of the First National Survey to all 103 institutions that had reported patients in the First National Survey and to five institutions that had reported patients after De-cember 31,1987. In addition, survey forms were sent to 48 university or major medical centers that had not reported patients with HAM in the First National Survey.…”

“…Similarly, despite routine screening of blood for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and antibodies to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc), 5% of post-transfusion hepatitis cases continue to be attributed to Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection (6). Human T-cell leukemia virus (HTLV-I) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections have also occurred following transfusion of blood negative for anti-HTLV-I and anti-CMV, respectively (7,8). Other viral agents such as non-A, non-B hepatitis (NANB), for which specific screening assays are unavailable, are also transmitted by cellular blood products.…”
