“…Hernandez et al demonstrated that – self-collection for detection of penile HPV was preferable to clinician-collection among U.S. males [10]. CDC-funded projects in the USAPI have shown high preference for alternatives to traditional cytology based screening [11]. Nonetheless, urine based HPV testing has not been rigorously evaluated in clinical trials.…”

“…Indeed, genital HPV infection prevalence is lower in men than women in most populations studied [102], and the transmission of HPV from the cervix to the male genitalia occurs with significantly greater frequency than vice versa [103]. When oral HPV infection was assessed in a group of women, men who have sex with men and heterosexual men, the highest rate of oral HPV infection acquisition was detected among heterosexual men [104], presumably because their sexual partners were more likely female.…”

“…We previously observed that auto-inoculation was common, particularly in men, and included transmission of sub-clinical HPV infection from the genitals to the hands 5. In an early study, concurrent genital condyloma and oral warts were common14 underscoring the possibility of oral-genital auto-inoculation.…”

“…Despite the ubiquitous nature of HPV infection, there is limited knowledge of the relationship of clinical and sub-clinical HPV infection occurring in different parts of the body. In a prior study of HPV transmission in heterosexual couples, we observed that auto-inoculation was common in men and included transmission of sub-clinical HPV infection between different genital sites as well as between genital and extra-genital sites of the body 5. To further examine the dynamics of HPV auto-inoculation, we examined the relationship of self-reported wart history to the acquisition of asymptomatic genital HPV infection in a cohort of adult men.…”
