Transmission-electron-microscopy study of quasi-epitaxial tungsten-bronze (Sr2.5Ba2.5Nb10O30) thin film on perovskite (SrTiO3) single crystal

Abstract: Strontium barium niobate (Sr 2.5 Ba 2.5 Nb 10 O 30 ) thin films were deposited on (001) SrTiO 3 single-crystalline substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The growth nature was investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Selected-area electron diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed the existence of six types of grains. These grains grew on the substrate in a partially epitaxial fashion. Geometrical models were built, which were confirmed by TEM observations. Based … Show more

“…Previous works on TTB [001]-oriented films showed formation of a dense coating, ,, while in the present work, [001]-oriented single nanorods were observed, which is an unreported result so far. The lattice spacing c being considerably smaller than a , the structure presents a strong anisotropy (see Figure b).…”

“…[28] Extensive work has also been done by Setter to verify the orientations of SBN present after PLD growth on STO. [29,30] For the integration of SBN-based electro-optical switches with silicon photonics, it is vital to grow crystalline SBN of welldefined orientation on Si. One way to do this is using an intermediate layer of STO.…”

“…Thin films offer advantages including texturing of the materials, improvement of properties, and potential minimization of devices . For example, strain engineering with a proper choice of substrate and synthesis method can tune the properties of ferroelectric thin films. SBN thin films have been deposited by different synthesis methods, including PLD, RF sputtering, sol–gel synthesis, polymeric chemical method, , and chemical solution deposition (CSD) . The physical deposition techniques are time-consuming, hard to upscale, or expensive, while wet chemical synthesis often uses toxic organic solvents.…”

“…The structure of SBN thin films typically ranges from polycrystalline to oriented and epitaxial, ,,, where the type of substrate is an important parameter. Epitaxial or highly oriented growth has been reported on MgO, ,,,,,, SrTiO 3 (STO), ,,,, Si(100), , and LaNiO 3 /CeO 2 /YSZ/Si(100) .…”
