ᯑɛɉɇɻǽ‫ף‬ᕮո╫Ǻȗș۰༔ǤțǮɳɉɳ‫ڽ‬ȂȪɒɇʀɄࢪɛ‫ك‬ɉɇɻǽႹΚΧᙉ˛ǺǙǠȚȪəɇȬɐኝլTitania layers were deposited on titanium substrates in titanylsulfate solutions under varied concentration 0.01 and 0.03M, pH 0.67-1.27 and temperature 60 and 80c C. They were rinsed and subsequently aged in water at 80c C for 3d. The layers consisted of only rutile or rutile with trace anatase, depending on the conditions. The X-ray diffraction intensity indicates that the rutile particles grew preferably in 101 plane, regardless of being aged or not. When aged, the anatase diffraction intensity increased, and anatase newly grew in the layer consisting only of rutile. When soaked in a simulated body fluid SBF of the Kokubo recipe, the rinsed layer with only rutile was weakly active to deposit apatite within 5 d, while the other two exhibited no deposition. The aging improved activity. Although anatase is reported in the literature to be more active than rutile, the present study indicates that the rutile layer is more active. Thus, it is concluded that topotaxy or epitaxy would not work well but other issues like the presence of Ti-OH affect apatite deposition.

Ceramic biomaterials have been used clinically for repairing bony defects due to their biological affinity to living bone. Among ceramic biomaterials, bioactive ceramics directly bond to living bone. The bonding mechanism of bioactive ceramics to living bone provides a unique strategy in the development of novel biomaterials with high functionality. The mechanism of bonebonding has been clarified through observation of interfaces between artificial materials and living bones as well as investigation of structural changes of the materials in solutions mimicking in vivo conditions. A simulated body fluid (SBF) that has similar concentrations of inorganic ions has been used to estimate surface structural changes of implanted materials in bony defects. Bone-like apatite deposition on the surface of implants is an important event to achieve bone-bonding with bioactive ceramics. Thus, it is important to control the reaction of such materials with body fluid during the development of novel biomaterials. Based on a fundamental understanding of the reactions of ceramic materials in SBF, novel types of biomaterials have been designed, such as surface-modified titanium metal, organicinorganic hybrids, biomimetic composites, bioabsorbable materials, and calcium phosphates with designed morphology. In this review, the development of bioactive materials is described through a fundamental understanding of the calcification mechanisms of bioactive ceramics in SBF.

Preparation of Bioactive Chitosan-hydroxyapatite Nanocomposites for Bone Repair through Mechanochemical Reaction

Natural bone is a kind of nanocomposites composed of orientated hydroxyapatite (HAp) along c-axis and fibrous collagen. Therefore, composites exhibiting composition and structure analogous to those of natural bone have been expected to be useful bone substitute materials. Organic polymer-HAp composites have been attracted much attention since they have interesting features such as bone-bonding ability, i.e. bioactivity and flexibility. In the present study, chitosan-HAp nanocomposites were prepared through mechanochemical reaction using conventional ball mill and subsequent aging. The obtained composites contained carbonate-containing HAp, and HAp nanocrystals in the composites aged at 25 C for 24 h showed a needle-like structure. They can form bone-like HAp on their surfaces after soaking in simulated body fluid (SBF), indicating potential for bioactivity in living body. The prepared chitosan-HAp composites are expected to be one of the useful bone substitute materials.
