Transmission and Clinical Characteristics of Asymptomatic Patients With SARS-CoV-2 Infection

Abstract: The 2019 novel coronavirus disease, SARS-CoV-2, is now spreading globally and is characterized by person-to-person transmission. However, it has recently been found that individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 can be asymptomatic, and simultaneously a source of infection in others. The viral load detected in nasopharyngeal swabs of asymptomatic carriers is relatively high, with a great potential for transmission. More attention should be paid to the insidious spread of disease and harm contributed by asymptomatic… Show more

“…In this report, we describe some asymptomatic carriers of the disease. Healthy asymptomatic carriers are more likely to be younger (median age: 34.5 years) than symptomatic hospitalized patients (median age: 56.0 years) ( 10 ), which is consistent with some recent studies ( 11 ). RNA tests of nasopharyngeal swabs were 100% positive, which is much higher than the positive rate in stool and urine specimens in asymptomatic carriers, suggesting that nasopharyngeal swabs could be the optimum samples.…”

“…RNA tests of nasopharyngeal swabs were 100% positive, which is much higher than the positive rate in stool and urine specimens in asymptomatic carriers, suggesting that nasopharyngeal swabs could be the optimum samples. However, the nasopharyngeal swabs test was reported to deliver false negatives because of sample collection and the operating procedures in some studies ( 11 ). All asymptomatic carriers presented with elevated IgG antibody levels, while the IgM antibody levels were slightly elevated in a few patients in our study.…”

“…Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness of variably severity; ranging from asymptomatic infection to mild infection, with fever and cough to severe pneumonia and acute respiratory distress 1 . Current reports suggest that asymptomatic spread is substantial 2 , and SARS-CoV-2 infection induces a transient antibody response in most individuals 3 . Therefore, development of successful interventions is an immediate requirement to protect the global population against infection and transmission of this virus and its associated clinical and societal consequences.…”

“…The basic reproduction number (R0) for SARS-CoV-2 infection before the implementation of mitigation strategies is estimated to range from approximately 2.0 to 3.6 [7][8][9][10][11][12], with a high risk for transmission because of high numbers of asymptomatic subjects and emerging clusters [13][14][15]. Transmission models based on real-world epidemiological data are important tools for understanding the dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 transmission and can be useful to guide mitigation strategies and policy decisions designed to assist patients with COVID-19 and reduce disease spread [9, [16][17][18][19][20][21].…”
