Translocated native pine martens Martes martes alter short‐term space use by invasive non‐native grey squirrels Sciurus carolinensis

Abstract: 1. Predators can shape the distributions and dynamics of their prey through direct and indirect mechanisms. Where prey animals are regarded as pests, the augmentation of predator populations might offer a potential tool in their management. Declines in invasive non-native grey squirrel Sciurus carolinensis populations inIreland and Scotland have been related to an increase in range and density of native pine marten Martes martes populations. These reductions in grey squirrel abundance have, in turn, been linke… Show more

“…Our results suggest that restoration of native top predators in terrestrial ecosystems may provide an important management tool to assist in limiting the abundance and distribution of overabundant prey species. With a growing interest in restoring top predators globally, further work should also explore impacts on invasive species [56] that are contributing to a loss in diversity—one of the main drivers of the global extinction crisis [57].…”

“…Predator species play an essential role in maintaining ecosystem functions (Atkins et al., 2019; Estes et al., 2011; Jiménez et al., 2019) and shape the ecology of prey species, such as spatiotemporal activity patterns (McNicol et al., 2020; Monterroso et al., 2013). The landscape of fear or predation risk is one of the modeling forces that predators compel on prey species (Creel & Christianson, 2008; Preisser et al., 2005).…”

“…Intriguingly, recent studies in Britain and Ireland have shown that the presence of a predator, the pine marten ( Martes martes ) (Sheehy & Lawton 2014, Twining et al 2020, 2021) is associated with a reduction of grey squirrel populations and thus facilitates a natural recovery of the red squirrel. As a result, a number of pine marten reinforcement projects have taken place in Britain (Sheehy et al 2018; McNicol et al 2020a, 2020b). Captive bred pine martens have been released in the Gwynedd area of our study (Bamber et al 2020).…”
